FAQs We’ve gathered the most frequently asked questions we get from our students. If you still have unanswered questions, feel free to contact us here , and we’ll be happy to help. Getting Started What do I need to do before I can start driving? - You must have a provisional driving licence. - You can apply for a provisional licence online via the Directgov website or by completing the D1 application form, which is available at most post offices. - If you’re applying via the D1 form, you’ll need to send original documentation to the DVLA to confirm your identity. - The minimum age to legally drive on public roads is 17. However, if you’re disabled and in receipt of the mobility allowance, you can start at 16. - Before starting, make sure you meet the minimum eyesight standards for driving. Do I need to pass the theory test before I can start lessons? No. In fact it is a good idea to learn the theory whilst you are learning the practical as it can bring the subject alive making it easier to understand and remember. How do I book my first driving lesson? You can book your first lesson by visiting our website’s Home or Lessons & Prices page and clicking on the booking option. This will take you to the GoRoadie app, where you can fill out an enquiry form , and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Areas Covered What areas do you provide lessons in? We cover lessons in DD1–DD4. If you live outside Dundee, including areas like PH12 or PH13, please contact us to discuss arrangements. Lessons and Scheduling How often should I take lessons? How often you have your lessons is entirely up to you. We recommend at least 1 session of 2 hours per week. The more lessons you take the quicker you will learn and the more money you will save. A 1-hour lesson taken once a week would equate to taking between 9 months to 1 year to learn to drive! How long are the lessons? Our standard lessons are 1 hour, or 2 hour sessions. How do lessons work? Driving lessons begin with learning the basics, such as vehicle controls and road safety. As you progress, we’ll cover manoeuvres, driving on different types of roads, and more advanced skills like navigating roundabouts and motorways. How many driving lessons will I need to take? Driving is a skill that some people learn quicker than others. The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency states that on average a person requires approximately 44 hours of professional lessons combined with approximately 22 hours of private practice. Your instructor will monitor your progress at the end of each lesson using a progress tracker and from this you will be able to assess how near the test standard you are. Can I choose to have a female instructor? Yes, we have female instructors available. Please contact us for their availability. Can I schedule lessons around work or school hours? Yes, we offer flexible lesson timings, including evenings and weekends, to fit around your schedule. What happens if I need to cancel a lesson? We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. If you inform us within this time frame, we’ll reschedule your lesson free of charge. Learning and Safety What will I learn in my first lesson? In your first lesson, you’ll learn the basics, including car controls, how to move off and stop safely, and an introduction to clutch control. Will my instructor expect me to know the basics of learning to drive? No, your instructor will in many cases prefer you to have had no training. If you are starting with a clean slate the Instructor can tailor their instruction to suit your learning capabilities. I’m really nervous about learning to drive. Can you help? Absolutely! Many of our students feel the same way, and it’s completely normal. Taylor’s Driving School has a lot of experience helping nervous pupils build confidence. Our instructors are particularly patient and understanding and will work at your own pace. Do you provide lessons for learners with disabilities? Yes, we are happy to assist learners with disabilities. However, please note that some disabilities may require car modifications, and unfortunately, we are not able to provide modified vehicles. Can I practise in my own car? Yes, as long as your car is insured and roadworthy, we can use it for your lessons. Can a friend or relative teach me how to drive? The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency strongly recommends that you take lessons from an Approved Driving Instructor. If your friend or relative teaches you they must be over 21 years of age and have held a Full British Driving Licence for at least 3 years. It's worthwhile remembering that learning with a friend or relative means you could pick up their bad habits. Your instructor will advise when they feel you are ready to gain additional experience by going out with a friend or a relative. Remember their cars will more than likely not have the safety of dual controls and relevant insurance. Exams and Licensing How do I prepare for the theory test? We provide access to the Theory Test Pro App free of charge for our learners. Our instructors can also monitor your progress and assist you with any areas you find challenging. How do I know if I’m ready for my driving test? Your instructor will assess your skills during lessons and let you know when you’re fully prepared to pass. What happens if I fail my driving test? It’s okay—many learners don’t pass on their first attempt. We’ll work with you to strengthen any areas of weakness and help you rebook your test. Can I use your car for my driving test? Yes, most of our students choose to use the car they’ve practised in for their test. Let us know when you’re booking, and we’ll make arrangements.
